Entry 2: Artist’s Eye for Treasure

Stefan looked around cautiously as he walked towards the agreed upon meeting spot. There was never trusting some areas. Let alone some sellers. Esper followed close at his heels.

“Ah! Delvanguard! I was beginning to think you might not show up.” The man rubbed his hands together after pushing away from the wall he had been leaning against. Eyes darting around nervously before patting the crate beside him. “A friend told me you had interest in such treasures from the War of the Magi.”

“Depends.” Stefan scowled as he crossed his arms over his chest. “The quality has yet to be determined. I refuse to accept a price until I check the items myself. I’m not a fool, Bayard.”

“Of course!” Bayard grimacing before moving to remove the crate lid and stepping aside. Motioning for Stefan to step forward.

Stefan leaned over the crate to pull out the first item in reach. Holding it up to the light and studying it for a long moment. Swapping it for another item in the crate. The second item smashing down at the feet of the seller. Esper crouched and ready to pounce if needed.

“Garbage. It’s all synthetic junk. Your ‘friend’ should have told you I would be able to tell the difference between a cheap fake and the real deal.” Stefan picked up the first item again and waved it towards the seller in anger. “Keep your false junk. I should have known by your behavior that you were trying to pull the wool over my eyes.” Tossing the other item onto the ground before turning to stalk away.

Esper giving the man a rather hostile stare before turning to follow his master. Leaving Bayard behind to seethe that things hadn’t gone as planned. Once out of sight a slight grin forming on Stefan’s lips. Tossing a small stone up in the air before catching it again.

“Stupid idiot. Most of that junk was definitely fake. Yet he didn’t even see a real treasure among the false. That’s what one gets for trying to pass off synthetic for real to someone with the eye for telling them apart.” Stefan held the dark stone up in the light before looking down at his ruby companion. “Shouldn’t have tried to sell me fakes and I might have actually paid him for this. Too bad for him, Esper. Alright time to head home and relax. I’ll even play some music for you tonight to celebrate our find.”

Esper bounced along beside him, clearly happy. The ruby carbuncle was ever fond of when Stefan played for him at the apartment in the Goblet. It was something Stefan only shared with his fuzzy companion. Not even his sister or mother knew of his love of music and art. Only Esper. Granted his love of treasure and hunting old ruins still ranked above his personal activities. Just like finding this treasure tonight.

Entry 1: Ghost by My Side

Destiney paused to take a deep breath. Late. Definitely later then every year before. A part of her felt bad for being late this year. Though she knew well her father would forgive her for it. Especially since she was busy being happy for a change.

“Hi daddy…” Destiney spoke softly as she knelt down by the grave marker to place a small bouquet of flowers she had gathered herself. Hand reaching up to gently touch the marker as tears gathered in her eyes. How she missed him so much. Even all these years since.

It felt like a gentle brush of a hand across her shoulder. Turning her head to only catch a brief glance of a familiar specter that still always lingered around her. Always there like a guardian angel. It wasn’t her father’s spirit though. Giving him a sad smile before wiping at her eyes. “Thank you, Leon. I’ll be okay.”

Her gaze going back to the marker and the flowers she had placed. “I met someone, daddy. He’s so very sweet and caring… I was with him instead of visiting. I guess time just… Got away from me this year. I’m sure you understand. I think you’d really like Syluss.” Destiney chuckled softly as she wiped at her eyes again. “He’s so different then other guys but he really truly makes me happy. Makes me feel safe.”

Taking a deep breath as she closed her eyes to fight back the tears. A longing for Syluss to hold her but she had wanted to come here alone. Even if her father couldn’t hear her. This was something she preferred was more private. Well as private as things got when there was a spirit that still watched over her.

Brushing the dirt from her pants as she stood up with a heavy sigh. “I should get going. I promised mom I’d stop by before heading home. Stefan actually agreed to join us for dinner. That’s right, daddy. Stefan finally came home…” Now the tears did fall down her cheeks. The family was almost whole again. Except for one missing piece they would never have again.

It was like a phantom brush again. She knew it was Leon trying to comfort her. In a way she wished he was more then a ghost at her side. Quickly she brushed away the tears again. So much for trying to smile for her father. It still hurt too much to remember they were without him. “I love you, daddy…”

Destiney gave the grave marker one final look before turning to head off. If she lingered longer it would be more then a few tears. Last thing she wanted to do was worry her mother if she showed up looking like she had been bawling her eyes out.
