20. What would you like to achieve before you die?

“Honestly I really am not sure. I guess be happy with the life I’ve led? Maybe some day have a family of my own? I’m still young and I hope I still have many years left to go. I would rather live for the moment then plan for the future. I’ll go down whatever path the gods take me.”

“See Haillenarte restored. To no longer be mocked by those that feel they failed for something beyond their control when they lost the Vigil. Most importantly to help my commander realize his potential. Lord Francel deserves to be more then a shadow under his siblings.”

🐕-A memory of teamwork

image

Lance stood at the ruins of the Steel Vigil. Today was a day he wished to pay respects to the fallen. To those lost in the attack that claimed the lives of many. By claws and dragon fire. A day he would never forget. He looked up at the shrouded weather of the day as he drew his sword. Looking to the blade as he closed his eyes and let the memories come back of that day here before it was nothing more then ruins.

He remembered the men he was working with. It had seemed like just another day. He had reported back to his commander on the latest movements he had seen while on patrol with an elder knight. He was still newer then most of the knights stationed here for Haillenarte but already accepted into their fold.

Then the attack came. Orders were shouted but things were in chaos soon after. Lance stuck close to his usual team for drills. Fighting back against the beasts that now rushed the halls looking to kill them all.

New orders were shouted. Orders from the commander himself as he went to face the dragons of Nidhogg’s brood that came to bear down upon them all. Smoke and fire choked the halls. Parts of walls were crumbling down around them.

Lance hated the idea of leaving the young lord behind as he commanded the retreat. But he knew orders were to be followed. His fellow knights seemed to be just as torn about the decision as well.

“You heard the commander! Retreat!” Lance barked out the order as he knelt down to help an injured teammate. He would not leave behind someone that could be saved. Another of his fellows took to the other side of the injured man. Together they helped him down the smokey hall towards the exit. The others of their group fending off anything that blocked their path.

Lance glanced back one last time in the direction they had left the young Haillenarte lord. He offered a prayer to Halone for him as he stepped out into the fresh air of Coerthas with the team. The Vigil was lost to them. The best they could do was work together to save those that could escape.

It was a memory Lance would never forget. One of teamwork and one of loss. That day forever etched into his mind. Lives had been saved but many had also been lost. Including the life of Lord Chlodebaimt de Haillenarte who had given his life to help others escape. It was through that sacrifice and the teamwork of his fellow knights that any had managed to escape to see another dawn.

(Thanks. @skysteelsun Sorry for the long wait. I know it’s sort of a mix of teamwork/loss but it was what came to mind. XD)

Memory Prompts

Lance offered his healer friend a shrug and a smile. The man had
given Lance one of those looks. The look over the top of his glasses
that asked why he was tolerating this visit. The man set to work
examining Crow’s head wound as Lance stood nearby. He crossed his arms
as he found a clear space near a wall to lean.

“Don’t worry
about it. I’ll take care of whatever
Arthurioux

wants or needs. He’s been taking care of me for some time.” Lance
offered Crow a grin. “Just because Skyfire is a dull post doesn’t mean I
stay out of trouble.”

“Hardly ever mind you.”
Arthurioux

shook his head and sighed towards Lance. His hands were gentle as he
took to cleaning the head wound first before even making any attempts
with healing magic. “You’ve been in your fair share of fights in the
Brume with that Duskwight before. What was his name?”

“Let’s not bring him up.” Lance scowled an looked away.

“Lance
is a bleeding heart. Either he ends up on my doorstep or he comes with
someone else.” The older man explained to Crow as he checked over his
work before moving onto the healing magic, hoping to relieve the pain
and any serious damage that the young man might have suffered. “He means
well though.”

( @crowbrume from here – repost cause tumblr forgot to tell you an it’s way back in my posts now. This was just easier.)

“That is very… generous of you,” Crow said and then hissed in pain when the old man started checking on his wound. Not like he wasn’t used to being hurt, but the pain in his head which just became more or less bearable now was awoken again, and even if he knew that it was for his own sake – he didn’t like it much.

“Yeah, I see that Ser Lancefer here is a very nice guy,” he said, wincing in pain. “Picking up guys like me on the streets and all. Very, very kind of him…”

And kinda very reckless, but he didn’t say it out loud. Instead he decided to ask how serious his wounds are, because it was the most important thing right now. “also I really feel in debt to you all. Look, I’m not very good with house work or something, but if there’s something I can do for you to replay for your kindness, please, tell me.”

He let out another hiss and sighed. Now he felt tired and wondered if he would be allowed to stay here to take some rest once his wounds will be treated properly, or if he need to find another corner on the streets to spend this night again.

( @nebula1984 )

“You can just call me Lance. I’m not going to insist you keep calling me Ser or even Lancefer. It’s frankly quite a mouthful most days.” Lance shrugged from where he leaned, watching the older healer work on Crow.

“And reckless.” The old healer added for Crow, obviously not afraid to speak such to the knight in the room. “Though he has gotten a bit better lately with his reckless behavior. I have not seen him quite as much lately unless he has acquired a new healer.”

Lance smirked at
Arthurioux as he pushed away from the wall to walk over. Being careful not to crowd a healer at work. He looked over at Crow to check on the man. Both curious and concerned. He hadn’t missed those hisses of pain earlier while the healer had been cleaning the wound.

“I’m not that reckless. Honestly old man. You make me sound like such a careless fool.” Lance replied before looking to Crow as he was offering to repay the kindness. “It’s fine. Really. I come from a family that can afford it. Not that I spend much of what I earn either. Though if you are going to be stubborn and keep insisting… I’ll try to think of something if it would make you feel easier about it all.” This earned Lance a snort of amusement from the healer.

“I would like to keep the boy overnight at the very least. To make sure he is not likely to keel over despite my work.”
Arthurioux

said as he lowered his hands from Crow’s head when he was done.

“Of course. I know where the spare room is down the hall. Is that alright with you, or do you have another appointment with those thugs from earlier?” Lance looked towards Crow.

– Special Abilities:

  • Endurance: He’s been a knight for years and not a slack one. He trains daily and has built up a pretty good endurance for fighting.
  • Loyalty: His loyalty to the things he cares about drives him to push harder and endure more. He often pushes aside the pain in a fight because of this.
  • Shield: He doesn’t just use his shield for defense. He has also learned to use it to his advantage in combat.

– Weaknesses:

  • Left Side: He doesn’t defend his left side as well. If he ends up with an injury it is usually to his left. It’s part of why he fights with a sword and shield, attempting to use that shield to protect his weak side in a fight.
  • Haillenarte: If you mock House Haillenarte the odds are he will fight you. But the problem is, is that it clouds his judgement to goad him like that. He has a strong loyalty to the Haillenarte family after the events of the Steel Vigil an that loyalty is also a weakness.
  • Family: If you threaten his family or try to use them against him odds are it will throw him off. Or even if he is forced to stand against family… He just can’t bring himself to hurt or let his family be hurt.
