🌙 (Lance or Dest. Take your pick.)

Ishgard was always more peaceful at night. Even during the war. The moon shone brightly, lighting up the Pillars. Em was looking towards the sky and the stars as she walked her usual path. Nothing out of the ordinary so far. Her hands were clasped behind her and she listened to the wind blow around her. Nothing too stressful.

Guards came and went on their patrols. Always straightening up when they saw her. House Durendaire guards giving a salute. It was always a different experience when she was in the Shroud. Her titles, accomplishments, and lineage meant nothing. At least, nothing good.

She was lost in her own thoughts when she noticed a familiar figure in the distance. No doubt having met the man at one of the countless noble events are get togethers. Em pulled the heavy jacket around her a bit more and made her way over to him.

Speaking softly, she slowed her approach. “Excuse me, Ser… are you alright?”

It had been a rough day. Another argument with his family. Always over the direction of his life as he stopped home briefly. Yet his father never mentioned the other job they had him doing in front of his mother. Never would.

Yet he wouldn’t dare go bother Tara or Destiney this late. They had had enough problems of their own lately. So instead he had chosen to take a walk. Avoid the house. Maybe wait till everyone else was asleep to go home.

However that walk hadn’t lasted very long. Instead he found himself standing near a railing, overlooking another part of the city. Just staring up at the stars above. His breath coming out in white puffs in the cold night air.

He heard the foot steps before the voice. Even lost in thought he made himself keep an ear on his surroundings. He recognized the voice from one of the parties but he had never gotten a name to put with the face. Not that wearing masks made things any easier.

Her words caught him off guard. A look of surprise crossing his features for just a moment. Quickly he slipped a smile over it to hide it away. He gave her a polite bow before straightening once more.

“Ah. Ser Lancefer Aurifore.“ He introduces himself to her. “I merely found the night good for thought an escape. I am just fine otherwise though I thank you for your concern. I’m afraid I did not catch your name the last we met, my lady.”

“Ah, I’m not a very good son. My dad was a good man but I never really knew him – he was always off fighting. Then he left one time and never came back.” Riski rubbed the back of his neck sheepishly, with a smile to match. “My mother, though-”

He didn’t finish his thought, the words abandoned as he lunged forward. Properly catching someone who’s falling was never a skill Riski was able to refine, but he was able to drag Destiney around so that when they both hit the ground, she landed on top of him instead. “…You okay?” he asked breathlessly, wincing against the rock prodding him insistently in the kidney. “Might be a good idea to watch the ground around here- it’s kinda uneven.”

She had been expected a hard landing on her butt at the very least. Instead she was granted a much softer landing. Even if it was on top of her newest friend. It took his words a few seconds longer then average to register with her brain as she looked at him. Of course Daisy just hovered nearby with her hands over her mouth, laughing at the both of them.

“By the Twelve! I’m so sorry!” She looked at him with wide eyes before moving to get off of him. She held a hand out to him to help him up since it was her fault he was on the ground to begin with. “I’m fine. Thank you. I’ll try to better watch my step. As nice as a pillow landing you made, I’d hate to hurt you too. You are okay yes? I didn’t hurt you by landing on you?”

“I’m all right,” Riski assured her, accepting the offered hand up to his feet. He brushed himself off and grinned. “You’re not that heavy.” He might end up with a bruise or two, but there were far worse potential outcomes. His clothes are dirty, but they were already that before he went rolling around on the ground.

“I guess I’m just a bad influence,” he commented with a chuckle. “Sorry about that. So are you planning to come all the way to Costa with me, or is Wineport the end of the line?” he asked, changing the subject again. “I wasn’t planning on staying there long before heading home, so I don’t want to leave you stranded or anything.”

A slight sigh of relief as he insisted he was alright. The fall might not have been very fall for much damage but she had still felt a bit bad for it. It had been her carelessness after all. “Ah no you are not a bad influence. You should have seen me the one time at Bronze Lake. Trying to escape a friend an falling on my bottom after hitting a patch of water on the wood planks.”

“Leave me stranded?” She smiles warmly at him before shaking her head. “As if I could be left stranded. I promise you I am more resourceful then that.” Her words were more a tease then serious. “I can come with you to Costa. Besides I’m not that overly fond of Wineport. Well for much beyond the wine that is. I do enjoy a nice glass on occasion. Besides Costa is always a nice place to visit.”

Dusk’s expression turned into one of worry when he noticed the Miqo’te losing her balance and was about to make an attempt to catch her when the barely half eaten apple suddenly dropped on his head with a thud after its long fall, distracting him enough to miss Karigan’s fall.

He looked at her in surprise, lightly rubbing the spot on top of his head the fruit had hit him. “You… Meant to hit me with the apple..?” he wondered loudly to her comment, unsure of which event she referred to as he walked over to her.

Going down on one knee he offered a hand to help her up, still with surprise mixed with a bit of confusion on his face. The expression soon faded though as a careful smile appeared in its stead, leaving his question behind to focus on the task at hand and going back to the mission.

“I’ll do better. Not get in trouble!” He reassure the other, ready to try again.

@nebula1984

Karigan blinked at him for a moment as he wondered out loud if she meant to hit him with the apple. It took her a moment to process that he had mistaken her comment for the wrong thing. Apparently falling on her backside an then making that comment hadn’t been paired together.

Laughter rang out from her as he knelt before her. It wasn’t that she thought his words of doing better were funny. She was still caught up on the apple hitting him an thinking she had done it on purpose. She gives him a toothy grin as she finally calms down, taking that offered hand to get back to her feet.

“I didn’t mean to hit ya with the apple. That was an accident. Honest.” She brushes the dirt off her shorts once standing once more. “Hows about we both do better an not get in trouble. I mean ya are talking to someone who gets in trouble on a daily basis.” A small grin as she puts her hands on her hips. “Mercenary life ain’t easy. Shall we try again then?”

Destiney just had to smile. He had a point. What did it matter as long as she enjoyed herself. Not like she had ever cared what the other kids had thought back then anyways. She had come to care a bit more what some people thought now but… Nope still didn’t care what people who didn’t know her thought. Daisy decided to take a seat on her shoulder as she was walking with Riski.

Her eyes were more on the toads then the dimming of his smile. Ugh she hated those toads. Definitely did not want to get pulled in by one of their tongues so she made sure to remain close to Riski as they passed by. She looked back to him as he gave an answer that was evasive. She could tell as he avoided answering the question completely. It was still an answer though. Well that or he had misunderstood but she was leaning more towards evasion. Obviously something about it wasn’t something he wanted to discuss. She wasn’t about to pry though. “I’m originally from Gridania. Spent several years in Ishgard and now live in Ul’dah. So we’re both a bit of the traveling type I’d say. I don’t do near the amount of freelance work I used to though. So I see less of the world then I once did.”

Riski put a protective arm around Destiney as they skirted the toads, releasing her again when they were in the clear. It wasn’t that he didn’t respect her personal space, it just seemed like the right thing to do when she crowded in on him for shelter. “I like the freedom travel provides. I never have to stay in the same place twice if I don’t want to, and the faces change with the locales.” He chuckled and offered her a wink. “Except when destiny plays a hand,” he said with mock seriousness, violet eyes sparkling at the punnish phrase. It had additional meaning to him as well, which made it even more pleasing.

“Ul’dah is an interesting place. A little too hot for my taste, but I’ve had a few jobs out there. And learned some interesting dance moves.” It had been a while since he’d last visited the desert city. That, he mused, would need to be corrected sometime in the near future. “How do you deal with the heat, living there?”

It had been tempting to lean into that protective arm. Though not quite tempting enough. Mostly because she was relatively unarmed for combat against toads and maybe because the thought of toad tongues made her squeamish. That an the actual physical contact wasn’t so bad once she was past the initial blushing an shyness about such actions. His pun made her laugh merrily. Usually she just groaned at the ‘Destiny’ puns that were made but she was enjoying hearing them from Riski. Probably cause she could make puns in return. “Well sometimes the Risk is worth taking too. I must admit though that seeing everything the world has to offer is always a nice perk.”

A casual shrug at the mention of the heat on Ul’dah. It was never really something she gave much thought to. “I just do. I think maybe it doesn’t bother me very much after living in Ishgard for five years in never ending winter. Not that the snow isn’t pretty at times. I’d rather enjoy it from inside in front of a fire with a good book though then actually be in it. Not that I am interested in going back to Ishgard either.”

“I’m always up for taking a risk,” Riski agreed cheerfully. “And I think maybe you’re just a special person. Lucky, too!” He skipped a few steps ahead of her, turning around to walk backward while he faced Destiney. “So what’d you have to live in Ishgard for? Not a typical place to just move to for the sake of it.”

He turned again to face the path ahead just in time to avoid tripping on a fallen tree branch. He hopped over it instead, showing significantly more bounce than he’d had while stuck under that tree. Amazing what a difference it was when one was no longer partially paralyzed.

His cheerfulness was infectious. Heck just watching him behave like this was. It was like he enjoyed being so carefree. “Depends on your definition of lucky and special.” She chuckled softly. “Bad luck? Oh I have plenty of that. Though I guess I have my share of good luck at times too.”

“As far as Ishgard…” Her expression was hard to read, almost a blank mask. An automatic response for the most part. She reached into the pouch at her waist to pull out a white half-mask. Like those worn by the Woodwailers or Gods’ Quiver. She held it up to her face an gave a weak a smile before continuing. “I went to live with some relatives for a while right before the calamity. My father was a Gods’ Quiver. He had to join the fighting. My mother went with him because she was a conjurer. She was born an raised in Ishgard but left to become an adventurer before she met my father.” Carefully she lowered the mask an tucked it away once more. “I got shipped there for safety. Not that dragons and heretics are much safer then Garleans.” She shrugs casually.

He returned to her side as she spoke, listening attentively to her explanation. When she finished, he mirrored her shrug. “Maybe it gave them peace of mind. Even if it was just as unsafe where you were, they could pretend that you were safe since you weren’t where they knew what the danger was. It sounds like they loved you and cared about your safety, at least.”

Riski smiled, his shoulders sagging just a little before he spoke again. “My father died when I was six, and my mother when I was eighteen. Ever since then I’ve been exploring; going where I want, when I want, with whoever I want. I like not having ties to any one place in particular – gives you a lot more freedom.”

Her hand hesitated for a moment as she raised it. It was always a inner fight on what was she was feeling and what was appropriate. Just as with healing someone. It was always a temptation to do it without asking. But she was better at resisting that temptation then a simple gesture such as a physical comfort. Her hand came to rest on his shoulder. A silent gesture of comfort.

“I’m sorry. About your parents. I know mine loved me. They always did. I’m just sorry I didn’t tell my father that in the last moments I got to see him. He… Never made it back from that battlefield. I still visit my mother from time to time but she knows I have a life of my own.” A genuine smile as she took a few steps ahead of him, turning to walk backwards and look at him. Daisy giggles and waves at him. She holds her arms out to indicate the world around her before continuing to speak. “As well as I think she is a bit proud that I have in a way followed in her footsteps. I became an adventurer rather then remained trapped by the confines of the Twelvewoods by joining the Gods’ Quiver. I’ve gotten to see the world. An meet so many wonderful people.”

A raised rock in the ground. Of course the heel of her foot caught it in her attempt to walk backwards and speak with Riski at the same time. Daisy fluttered away from her as she fell backwards.

It was supposed to be a simple yet kind gesture; accompany the Miqo’te through a dangerous area. But so much had gone wrong and the two barely escaped in one piece at the end. Stressed from the run and frustrated at the temporary companion the Miqo’te had shared her thoughts to him in a single short line of blame.

Dusk flinched to the comment. ‘His fault?’ He repeated in his mind, feeling anger rise to have the blame put on him even after he was the one who managed to get them out of the danger in the end. His brow furrowed and his visible eye turned dark as he roared back in defense to her statement, equally frustrated as her.

Turning quickly on his heel once he made his thoughts clear he left the Miqo’te there. Being alone on his way however and thinking of the situations they just made it through he slowly came to realize the mistakes he had made which ultimately had put them in the dangerous situation to begin with.

Rage turned into regret and the frown turned into an expression of sadness. He just wanted to help but had failed, then just made things worse by leaving. Suddenly feeling the need to make up for his mistake he once again spun around to hurry back in hope the girl would still be there. Of course she wasn’t.

With a heavy sigh and troubled eyes he scanned the area around to try find the Miqo’te without result. Dusk turned his gaze to the ground, disappointed in himself and sad he wouldn’t get the chance to make things up.

(Thanks @nebula1984 ! From the Sentence challenge meme !)

Karigan had hated the idea of asking for help if she could avoid it. This job though was more then she was ready to handle alone. So naturally she had had to look around for someone willing to help a young mercenary. Managed to recruit a sturdy looking Au Ra gentleman. Not that she knew much about the race or their clans. She just knew he looked tough.

Of course if things could go wrong they did. When they were safe she had shouted at him. She was angry an frustrated. More at herself then at him in general. They had both made mistakes. What she hadn’t expected was his roar of response. She managed to avoid flinching. Just barely. She held onto her anger like a blade, sharp an dangerous. At least until he stormed off.

She scaled a nearby tree that had a good solid branch to perch upon. A heavy sigh as she fished a faerie apple from her bag, staring at the ruby color. He had had every right to yell at her when she had blamed him. They had both been at fault for their mad dash to safety. Her ears drooped as she took a bite of the apple. Normally she wasn’t one to be so mean. Vocal yes but never truly had she ever blamed someone helping her. Though it was something she probably would have done eventually to someone.

Her ears perked up as she heard footsteps nearby. Apple half eaten hanging from her mouth. Her eyes widened in surprise. He had come back. Though part of her wondered if it was to yell at her again. He did have every right to since she had let her anger get the better of her.

“If ya came back to yell some more, get it over with.” Karigan called down from the branch she sat on, looking at the apple rather then at him. She thought about dropping it down towards his head but had chosen rather to speak instead. He didn’t really deserve a half eaten apple dropped on his head. “I deserves it. I was wrong to treat ya like that.”

His head perked up at the voice, startled and looking around to find the source before realizing it came from above him. Surprised to see the Miqo’te up in the tree yet relived that she was still here. Now he just hoped she would let him be her companion again to make up for the mistake.

With slumped shoulders to show his shame he shook his head lightly to dismiss what she said as he looked up at her with concern. “I’m sorry for getting us in trouble…” He said with a sad tone. “Can I still help you?”

Nervous about the answer his gaze turned to the ground, ready for a rejection and having to travel alone again.

Blue cats eyes stared down at Dusk, giving him a long assessing stare. Her tail swished back an forth gently behind her, ears twitching ever so slightly. It was a long moment of silence from the seeker in the tree. She leans forward slightly to better look down at him.

“I don’t see why not. I can’t very well finish the job on my own.” She shrugs an takes another bite of the apple. Inside she was actually very relieved that he had offered to help still. It saved her the time of finding someone else to help her finish. As well as he hadn’t been all that bad despite the chaos they had gotten into. Not that she couldn’t get into enough trouble on her own of course.

Of course she had leaned a bit too far forward an upset her own balance on the branch. Her arms pinwheeled to try an regain her balance. In the process… Whoops. There went the apple sailing up into the air for a moment before dropping down towards Dusk’s head. Karigan came tumbling down after but not towards the Xaela. She did land on her feet first but only to wind up falling backwards onto her butt.

“I meant to do that…” Her cheeks turned pink in embarrassment.

There was no way she could have missed that falter with the way she had been regarding him. The slip of that smile was slight though and quickly recovered. Everyone had their demons. Or well mistakes. But his words did ring true to her. Not that he was the first to mention something to her about the past helping to shape the person she was now. Maybe she was just better at listening then she was back then.

“You remind me of someone I used to know.” The words were soft, her smile holding just a touch of melancholy. It was the usual longing for something long lost yet at the same time… It felt different this time. She didn’t truly feel sad at the thought. Not really. It was more like a warm reminder. “He too always tried to look at the bright side of life. He made the most of the fate he had been dealt. But you are right. So was he. My brush with death set me on this path. Without it I might have had an entirely different life. If a life at all.”

“I will assume you are feeling much better now since you are standing?” Her eyes look over him from head to toe. Yes she had changed topics. The healer in her wanted to know of his condition. Even though she hadn’t really wanted to make it seem like she was anxious. “I could lend you a hand with whatever job it was you were doing. Or at least walk you to wherever you need to go. As I said I have no work to tend to today.” She quickly holds up a hand before he could protest. “I know you said it is your preference to pay for services. However I’m not offering for payment. Not unless you are offering a chance at your friendship as payment. I would like to get to know you better if you’ll allow it.”

“Sounds like a good guy,” Riski said, but dropped the subject afterward. It was clear she wanted to change it, and he wasn’t going to push – even if he did have a handful of remarks he could add that he was fairly sure would make her smile. It wasn’t worth it.

He flexed for her, his clothes covering the majority of the muscles on his wiry frame and making the gesture a complete joke. “Much better! Not quite good as new, but I have no problem with being comfortably broken-in.” Riski reached out to take the hand Destiney had used to forestall him, fingers clasping loosely around hers. “I was heading back to the ferry docks to get back across to Costa, but I think I might just take the monetary hit and visit Wineport’s aetheryte instead. You’re welcome to join me for as far as you like, but you must have come out here for some reason yourself?”

There was no way to resist laughing merrily as Riski flexed for her. If nothing else he was definitely amusing to spend time around. Though a blush did creep onto her cheeks when he loosely took her hand in his. His question though quickly made her forget about the fact he was holding her hand.

“I do have reasons but not the kind that you would think. I was out here to think. To remember.” She decided not to let herself feel sad. Not this time. There was a chance to make new memories out here. Something she knew Leon would have approved of. Replace the bad with good. So her smile didn’t waver this time as she closed her fingers around his. “Leon would never forgive me if I didn’t take a chance to make new memories when they present themselves. So let us head to Wineport. But do watch those Toads. I’d rather not be a victim of a tongue lashing.” A grin at her own attempt at a joke.

Riski grinned in response. “Yeah, those toads are awful. I’m a fan of a properly used tongue, but that is both improper use and also just a nasty tongue to begin with. You aren’t supposed to leave slime behind!”

He oriented himself as to where they were and started to head toward Wineport, his hand still in hers. He didn’t seem to notice or care about whatever impropriety such a thing could be. It was only hands. He simply enjoyed the contact with another person.

If Riski had not been holding her one hand she probably would have used her hands to hide her face. She was almost pretty sure he had meant the words he said in the exact way she was thinking they meant. Even managed to hold back the groan she wanted to give on such an idea. Of course her cheeks were scarlet. Adding further comment would probably only make things worse. Of course no one ever said she knew better on such things.

“I would say such behavior is improper for a lady to discuss. But I’ve never been much of a lady.”  A slight grin despite the thoughts in her head as they walked together towards Wineport. “Not unless said ladies like to climb trees and shoot bows growing up in the Twelveswood. Speaking of such. Would it be rude of me to ask where you happened to grow up? Or at least where you are from.”
