“You look positively enchanting this evening.” – Destiney

These
Masquerade Balls were definitely not a thing she was used to. Lance had insisted she come along with him to this one in Ishgard. He had to come to mingle on his family’s orders. Even if he was not the one to inherit the family business he was still expected to put on a good front for the Aurifore. Somehow he had managed to convince her into joining him. If she had to guess it was to avoid the ladies if he was seen to have a date this evening.

Lance had even gone out of his way to see she had a dress and mask specifically for this evening. A shimmering silver dress. Her mask in shades of teal and silver. At least if nothing else her cousin had good taste. It definitely seemed to make a nice statement when she walked in on her cousin’s arm. Whispers seemed to be plenty from a few ladies. Why not? She was a mystery masked woman with one of Ishgard’s upper class family sons. A son who was yet unmarried.

“You look positively enchanting this evening.”

Destiney blinked as she was interrupted from her thoughts of the other women and her cousin. Her hand went to her chest as she gave a polite bow to the other woman. Not surprised it was beautifully dressed elezen lady. Eyes looked the woman up an down, assessing. But… This one seemed different. Not like those who seemed to give her hateful stares and whispers.

“Thank you. I must say you look equally as lovely this evening.”

“Champagne?”

Destiney wasn’t sure why she had allowed her friend to talk her into coming to this Masquerade Ball. Such large gatherings were not a thing she was fond of. Too many faces. Too many people she didn’t know. But everyone was hidden behind masks.

Her fingers reached up to trace the edges of her own. Shades of blue and white with gold accents. It went well with her cerulean dress. She should not feel so nervous hiding behind a mask. But this mask was not the one she was used to. Nor was she feeling as gloomy as she usually did when wearing -that- one. Her stomach felt full of nervous butterflies instead.

“Champagne?”

She was brought back from her thoughts by a male voice. Ishgardian if she was to judge. Her eyes scanned over his taller frame. Elezen. The mask made it harder to judge though if the man was Wildwood or Duskwight. Not that it mattered. Though curiosity drew her to him like a moth to flame. Of all the pretty ladies here he had seemed to single her out. The one standing to the side trying to hide from the rest of the party.

“If you are offering I shall gladly accept.” She tried not to make it sound awkward. Staring was not exactly polite. Neither was standing there ignoring someone being polite to her. She added a warm smile to her answer.

“if you don’t rest, you don’t heal.” ((@sunshineandlotus))

Destiney knew she had been pushing herself hard. Needed to push herself. But this was almost to the point of madness. Her body was tired. Everything ached. Between the work for the Flames, work for  the Gods’ Quiver, errands for the Wailers, and her job at the Order… She felt near the point of exhaustion. Sleep had been little. Though thankfully it wasn’t nightmares this time. Those had not bothered her for some time.

She had nearly fallen down the stairs as she came down from getting a drink to take to her room.

“if you don’t rest, you don’t heal.”

Destiney blinked an looked up to see Rhisi standing near the front door. She gave the seeker a tired smile. There was never any arguing with Rhisi. At least not to Destiney’s point of view. To her Rhisi was like the mother of the company. Fighting a battle against her real mother had always been a losing battle. The same could be said for trying to deal with Rhisi.

“Right… Sorry. I guess the rest of my work can wait for a bit. Maybe you could make me a bit of that chamomile tea? Then I promise to go rest for a while. You always make good tea, Rhisi.” Destiney smiled warmly at the company’s leading lady. A bit of that soothing tea and a good rest. That sounded good actually.

“It will get better.”

It had taken her so long to finish this job. All that hard work an effort. Only for some random mercenary group to come an snatch it all away. Right from under her. She had failed. It would mean another night outside wherever she could find a place to rest. Hoping she would be safe. Sleeping lightly tonight.

She sighed heavily as she sat down on a nearby bench. At least the weather in Thanalan was never too terribly bad for sleeping outside. A frown crossed her features at the sound of paper crinkling beneath her. Her ears twitched as she moved to pick up the scrap left on the bench. Words were written upon it.

“It will get better.”

Her tail swished softly behind her as she looked at the words. A bit of hope when days were rough. She didn’t know if this had been for her or if she had just chanced upon it. But… It was still a ray of light on a very dark day.

“Things will get better.” She hummed softly to herself as she curled up on the bench. Today was just a bad day. Tomorrow she could try again. Give everything a fresh shot again. There was no giving up. She had a dream to strive for.

“You look tired.” – Lance

Lance had finally decided to take a break. It felt like he was chasing shadows. Every corner was another unexpected surprise. Either an enemy or a trap. He knew he should have asked Miu or Cio to accompany him like the first time. However he felt like he could not wait. His days off from duty were now often spent down here or watching over his cousin. Though thankfully things with his cousin were now more open then had been before.

He pinched the bridge of his nose as he exited from the dreaded place still no closer to any answers. The rumors still haunted him. Was Chlodebaimt’s ghost really wandering down in those ruins? He had to know. Had to do something. Even if alone.

“You look tired.”

He looked up at the words spoken. Did he really look that tired? Probably. He had been pulling extra shifts at Skyfire beyond what he did in his free time. It was probably time for a much needed break.

“Thank you, my lady. I do believe I need a break. I appreciate your words.” He said with a polite bow towards the elezen lady who had spoken to him.

“It will get better.” – Destiney

She had been looking at the flakes of snow as they fell down around her. Not once did she realize her expression had gone melancholy. She barely visited Ishgard anymore. Not since she had left roughly over three years ago after living in this cold frozen city for five years. There was no reason to.

Though a part of her everyday wished someone had stopped her that day. That someone would have kept her from going. But… Then she wouldn’t have ended up where she was now. Was what she suffered through until now worth it?

“It will get better.”

Destiney look down from the snowy sky at the sound of the voice. Her eyes found the speaker, tilting her head in thought. She had never met this woman before. Yet there was something about the elezen lady that felt… Kind.

“Thank you.” She replied quietly before offering a gentle smile. Yes everything she had suffered through would surely be worth it some day. Things would surely get better.

“If you don’t rest, you won’t heal.” – Your choice :3

Karigan sat up slowly. The pain made her ache all over. But if there was anything she hated more… It was being idle. Being idle meant no work was being done. Training was being missed. None of that was good to her. She spent many days living day to day on what she had.

Her fingers traced over bandages on her left arm. Slowly she began to check over the rest of her. More bandages in other places. Pieces of what she had been doing last before ending up in a bed at a inn began to filter back to her. The job had been dealing with pirates. Too many… Their numbers had overwhelmed her. Even all her training had done her no good.

“If you don’t rest, you won’t heal.”

Kari’s ears flattened against her head as she heard the woman speak. Blue cat’s eyes stared at the strange elezen woman. Possibly her savior. Her memory was foggy after a point of the fight.

“I’m fine. Right as rain.” Karigan said as she forced a smile. A sudden movement made her wince an nearly fall back to the pillow behind her. Maybe not so fine… “Okay I lied… But I can’t rest… I can’t afford this. I need to get back out there.”

“Don’t you know how much good you have done for others?”

image

“I have done good yes. But… I can still do more. As long as I live and breathe I can still do more.”

Lance looked around at those he called his companions. Other knights of Haillenarte. People he fought and bled beside. All in the name of a cause that was right. Haillenarte deserved every ounce of their loyalty.

Yes he had done good. Had been since the moment he could become an actual knight an not just some kid wet behind the ears. Every moment he stepped into Coerthas for duty he did some amount of good no matter how small. Protecting Ishgard and other people passing through the area was good. Not enough but it was a start. He would find ways to do more. Strive to improve.

He tucked away the note with those words. A silent reminder that someone out there had noticed his efforts. Not that he did what he did for praise. But… Once in a while… Being noticed was a nice feeling.

“Don’t you know how much good you’ve done for others?”

image

“Have I?”

Destiney looked down at the note in her hands. Daisy fluttered near her shoulder. Some days it felt like she could never do enough. That there was still too much left unfinished. Or too many people who could use help that she just was not good enough to provide. She kept pushing herself to her limits. Trying as hard as she could to be worthy of such words like those that graced this shred of paper.

Daisy’s gentle hand on her cheek made her finally quit staring down at the paper. The fairy’s face was full of concern for her. A small smile for her dear companion.

“Alright. Maybe a little?” She laughed as the fairy nodded to her words this time. Maybe she wasn’t always as hopeless as she seen herself at times. She had people who trusted her. People who relied on her. Warmth and acceptance no matter how she could screw up at times. “Thanks for the reminder, Daisy. An whoever sent this note. I guess I have done at least some good.”

“You can’t cheat death.” for Lancefer

image

He knew better then anyone those words. How many men an woman had he watched die over the years… So many that he felt he could have saved if he had been faster or stronger. How many injuries had he endured…

“You can’t cheat death.”

A scoff from him as he finally raised his hung head. True. He might not be able to cheat death but he could make the bastard work for it. Sky blue eyes stared ahead at the wyvern that drew closer to the unit he was working with. Death would come in time for them all, even him. But for now he was going to give every fight his all an make death earn the right to take his life.

“For Ishgard! For Haillenarte!” Lance gave a battle cry as he charged forth with his companions through the snow to the challenge before them.
